What is Pyridium used for?

PHENAZOPYRIDINE is a pain reliever. It is used to stop the pain, burning, or discomfort caused by the infection or irritation of the urinary tract. This medicine is not an antibiotic. It will not cure a urinary tract infection.

Contact your pediatrician regarding the use of this medicine by children. Special care might be necessary.

Overdosage: If you suspect an overdosage, get in touch with the nearest poison control center or emergency room immediately.

What to do if I missed a dose of Pyridium?

If you missed a dose, it should be taken as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. You should never take double or extra doses; a single doze is sufficient for the purposes.

What may interact withthis medicine?

Tell your prescriber or health care professional about all other medicines you are taking, including non-prescription medicines. Also tell your prescriber or health care professional if you are a frequent user of drinks with caffeine or alcohol, if you smoke, or if you use illegal drugs. Some of those items may also interact with your medicine, causing undesired consequenses. Please always consult with your health care professional prior to stopping or starting any of your medicines.

What should I watch for while taking Pyridium?

Let your doctor or health care professional know if there is no improvement to your symptoms or if they get worse.

This medicine colors body fluids in red. This effect is harmless and will go away after you are done taking the medicine. It will change urine to a dark orange or red color. The red color may stain your clothes. Soft contact lenses may become permanently stained. It is best not to wear soft contact lenses while taking this medicine.

If you have diabetes, you may get a false positive result for sugar in your urine. Talk to your health care provider.

Does Pyridium have any possible side effects?

The following side effects should be reported to your doctor or health care professional as soon as they are noticed:

  • allergic reactions like skin rashes, itching or hives,face, lips, or tongue swelling
  • blue or purple color of the skin
  • difficulty breathing
  • fever
  • less urine
  • unusual bleeding, bruising
  • unusual tired, weak
  • vomiting
  • yellowing of the eyes or skin

The side effects listed below usually do not necessarily require any medical attention (please do report them to your physician if they are recurrent or bothersome):

  • dark urine
  • headache
  • stomach upset

Other side effects are also possible, the above list is not all inclusive.

Where should I store Pyridium?

Keep this medicine out of the children’s reach.

This medicine should be stored at the room temperatures between 15 and 30 degrees C (59 and 86 degrees F). You should do your best to protect it from the light and moisture. Dispose of any unused medicine after the expiry date is reached.
