What is Nexium used for?

ESOMEPRAZOLE prevents the acid production in the stomach. It is used for the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), ulcers, certain bacteria in the stomach, and inflammation of the esophagus. It is also possible to use esomeprazole to prevent ulcers for patients taking medicines called NSAIDs.

What should I discuss with my physician prior to taking Nexium?

Please do tell your physician if you have any of the following conditions:

  • liver disease
  • an unusual or allergic reaction to esomeprazole, other medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives
  • pregnant or trying to get pregnant
  • breast-feeding

How should I use Nexium?

This medicine should be taken orally. Swallow its capsules whole with a glass of water. The capsules should never be crushed, broken or chewed. They can be opened though and their contents can be sprinkled on applesauce. Never crush the capsule contents into food. Esomeprazole works best when taken on an empty stomach at least one hour prior to a meal. It should be taken at regular intervals. You shouldn’t take it more often than prescribed.

Consult with your pediatrician regarding the use of this medicine by children. Special care may be necessary.

Overdosage: If you suspect an overdosage, contact the nearest poison control center or emergency room immediately.

NOTE: This medicine is only intended for your use. Never share it with the others.

What if I miss a dose of Nexium?

If you missed a dose, it should be taken as soon as possible. If it is almost a time for another dose, take only that one. You should never take double or extra doses.

What are the possible interactions with the other medicine?

  • ampicillin
  • digoxin
  • iron salts
  • itraconazole, ketoconazole, voriconazole, or other prescription medicines for fungus or yeast infections
  • warfarin

This list is not all-inclusive. Provide your health care provider with a list of all the medicines, herbs, non-prescription drugs, or dietary supplements you are using. Also let them know whether you smoke, drink alcohol, or use illegal drugs. Some of those items may interact with your course.

What should I watch for while using Nexium?

It can take up to several days for your stomach pains to cease or at least to get milder. Consult with your doctor if your condition gets worse or if there is no improvement.

Does Nexium have any possible side effects?

Side effects that you should report to your doctor or health care professional as soon as possible:

  • allergic reactions like skin rash, itching or hives, swelling of the face, lips, or tongue
  • breathing problems
  • chest pain or tightness
  • dark urine
  • unusually weak or tired

Side effects that usually do not require medical attention (report to your doctor or health care professional if they continue or are bothersome):

  • diarrhea or constipation
  • dry mouth
  • headache
  • nausea/vomiting
  • stomach pain or gas

Other side effects are also possible, the above list is not all inclusive..

Where should I keep Nexium?

Keep it out of the children’s reach.

It should be stored at the room temperature between 15 and 30 degrees C (59 and 86 degrees F) protected from light and moisture. Dispose of any unused medicine after the expiry date is reached.
