What is Sumycin used for?

TETRACYCLINE is an antibiotic. It helps to kill or stop the growth of certain bacterias. It is used against many kinds of infections, like skin, bone, respiratory tract, sinus, ear, and urinary tract infections. It is also capable of treating certain sexually transmitted diseases. It is ineffective against colds, flu, or other viral infections though.

How is Sumycin should be taken?

This medicine should be taken orally accompanied with a full glass of water. It should always be taken on an empty stomach, at least 1 hour prior to or at least 2 hours after a meal. It should never  be taken during a meal or especially together with the dairy products. The capsules should never be crushed or chewed. Take them in an upright or sitting position instead. Taking a prior sip of water might help you swallow it easier. Your bedtime dose should to be taken at least 10 minutes prior to lying down.This medicine should be taken at the regular intervals. You should be taking all of your medicine as prescribed even if you feel better or think that you do. Doses should never be skipped; neither should you stop the treatment course prematurely.

Contact your pediatrician regarding the use of this medicine by children. Special care might be necessary.

Overdosage: If you suspect an overdosage, get in touch with the nearest poison control center or emergency room immediately.

What to do if I missed a dose of Sumycin?

If you missed a dose, it should be taken as soon as possible. If the time has almost come for the next dose, only that one should be taken. You should never take double or extra doses; a single doze is sufficient for the purposes.

What are the possible interactions of Sumycin with the other medicine/food/etc?

  • antacids
  • birth control pills
  • methoxyflurane
  • other antibiotics like penicillin
  • some multivitamins
  • warfarin

Give your health care providers a list of all the medicines, herbs, non-prescription drugs, or dietary supplements that you are using. What should I watch for while taking Sumycin?

Let your doctor or health care professional know if there is no improvement to your symptoms or if they get worse.

This drug can make you more sensitive to the sun, that is why you should keep out of it during the treatment course. If it can’t be avoided, at least wear protective clothes and always use a sunscreen.You shouldn’t use sun lamps or tanning beds/booths during the treatment course.

Your birth control pills may become ineffective during the treatment course with this medicine. Consult with your doctor regarding the use of an extra contraception method during this course.

If the course is aimed at the treatment for a sexually transmitted disease, you should avoid sexual contact until the treatment is finished. It is also possible that your sexual partner will have to take the treatment as well.

You should avoid products with aluminum, calcium, magnesium, iron, zinc, or sodium bicarbonate for at least 2 hours prior to and following the use of this medicine.

Does Sumycin have any possible side effects?

The following side effects should be reported to your doctor or health care professional as soon as they are noticed:

  • allergic reactions like skin rashes, itching or hives,face, lips, or tongue swelling
  • dark urine
  • difficulty breathing
  • fever
  • pain on swallowing
  • rectal or genital irritation
  • tooth discoloration
  • unusually weak or tired
  • white patches or sores in the mouth
  • yellowing eyes, skin

The below side effects usually do not necessarily require any medical attention (please do report them to your physician if they are recurrent or bothersome):

  • black tongue
  • diarrhea
  • headache
  • loss of appetite
  • nausea, vomiting

Other side effects are also possible, the above list is not all inclusive.

Where should I store Sumycin?

Keep this medicine out of the children’s reach.

This medicine should be stored at room the temperatures between 15 and 30 degrees C (59 and 86 degrees F). Protect it from the light. Dispose of any unused medicine after the expiry date is reached.
